Teenage girl raped in Mumbai - We shud take action

Having read the above news I am extremely worried. What is happening to our country??? Mumbai, one of the safest cities in our country for women.

I grew up in that city. It was and in some ways still is a great city. I courted my wife there…and we have had some great times. My wife used to be in the ad films business…which means really long and odd hours. She used always feel proud about the fact that this is one citi in India where irrespective of the time, a woman can reach home safely using public transport.

The police force of Mumbai, one of the best in the world. They got the great Vardha Bhai (of the Dayavan fame) to his knees, they “encountered” Dawood Ibrahim’s empire and tore it apart. They have one of the highest crime solving rates in the world. And a constable from the same force behaves in such a disgusting/outraging manner.

Am sure the city’s politicians, senior policemen, thinkers, social activists and the common man must be deeply anguished at the outrage caused by this incident. But is that enough? Is dismissing the constable enough? Or should he be put through a public trial? Even if he is put through a public trial is it enough? Or should the system that led to this be put through a trial?

Recently, I got a mail (that was supposedly a message from our beloved president), where Dr. Kalam was reiterating the fact that there is no point blaming the system, each one of us has to make the difference at an individual level, only then will our nation move forward. But wonder what he will have to say about such monstrous disgusting behaviour from a person meant to uphold the law. I also can’t guess how he will react when the same guy through some loophole in the law will get away scot-free (for those who have forgotten - the Salman Khan “Hit & Run case”)

I plead, to all fair minded human beings this man should not go scot-free. We should make sure that this man should gets the maximum possible sentence. I have no personal vendetta against him. I do not even know the girl who has been put through such trauma. But, I feel for her, her family, who for no fault of theirs are scarred for life. I have this involuntary urge to see that this kind of a crime is not committed on another innocent child – especially a child who is just walking on a promenade, beach, park, road or for that matter anywhere. Most of us are parents and will soon have our children growing wings and wanting to do simple things in life like taking a walk on their own. It is our responsibility to ensure that we provide them with a safe environment to do so.

I request each one of you to raise your voice requesting this man be given the maximum sentence for perpetrating this heinous crime. Though I do not believe this will make any difference to the victim or her family, this might just save a lot of our children from being put through the same treatment.
